Known Issue: Cannot import Photos Library using macOS Sierra

Apple’s macOS Sierra and High Sierra include functionality that allows iCloud to continually watch your Photos Library for opportunities of optimization. However, this functionality interferes with Mylio’s ability to copy data out of Photos and into Mylio when using Mylio’s Photos Import tool. This issue can be resolved by temporarily disabling iCloud while Mylio imports, and then turning iCloud back on. These steps disable iCloud’s background services temporarily and do not cause any negative effects on your Photos Library or iCloud content.

    1. Ensure that the Photos application is closed.
    2. Open Finder.
    3. Navigate to the “Go” menu at the top of the screen.
    4. Select “Utilities” and open the application “Terminal”.
    5. Copy the following command and paste it into Terminal, then press the “return” key to run the command…launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchAgents/
    6. Open Mylio and import the Photos Library
    7. After the import completes, reopen Terminal (steps 1-4) and run the following command…launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchAgents/
    8. If step #7 is not run, Photos will not be able to open until the machine is restarted.

System Integrity Protection

In some cases, macOS may prohibit the above commands due to System Integrity Protection. The error may read “Operation not permitted while System Integrity Protection is engaged”. If you receive this error, Mylio cannot import your Photos Library directly on this machine as Apple’s security is prohibiting it.

When this happens, there are two possible workarounds:

  1. Copy your Photos Library to another Mac and try to import it using that machine.
  2. Manually export your Photos Library into Mylio by following the steps found under the “Importing A Selection Of Photos” section of this article.
