What’s New in Mylio?

It’s the season of giving, and in this release, Mylio is pleased to give you the power to do more. We have been busy adding support for the RAW files of 24 new cameras (see below) just in time for the holidays. We also added Optical Character Recognition (OCR), which is a fancy way of saying Mylio lets you search for words in your photos and PDFs. Want to search for the name on a road sign or parade banner? Mylio has you covered. Can’t remember where you cataloged that PDF or that screenshot of a quote? OCR to the rescue. We also improved the notifications in Mylio to help you stay up to date on the progress of your library.

New cameras added:

As usual, we’ve been making improvements and bashing bugs to enhance your Mylio experience. Some of the improvements include a new tour, a revamp of the Free Up Space on Camera Roll screen, and the filter now includes events. Some of the bugs we bashed include fixing an issue where XMP files would be left as standalone catalog entries, fixing an issue when external drives could not be added as devices on macOS, and fixing an issue on mobile when local Previews would be slow to load.

See the complete list of changes and bug fixes in the link below, and as always, enjoy your photos!

Duplicating Files

Mylio can allow you to duplicate an image with just a few clicks. This feature can be used to have both an edited version of a photo and an unedited version in your library. Additionally, you can sort them differently in Folder view. By quickly and easily duplicating your photos within Mylio you can easily maintain the integrity of your originals.

  1. Open Mylio in Folder or All Photos views and locate the image or set of images you wish to duplicate.
  2. Select the images so that they are outlined in blue. You can select multiple images by holding the Control key (Windows) or the Command key (Mac) while clicking.
  3. Select the Actions menu from the bottom of the Quick Actions Bar or right-click anywhere in the grid of photos.
  4. Select Duplicate Files.
  5. Mylio will automatically create a duplicate as [Image Name] (copy).

Free Up Space on Camera Roll or Media Library

Mylio can help clear up space in your mobile device’s Camera Roll or Media Library once the original image has been imported and protected to Mylio. In order to do this, Mylio needs to ensure your photo is protected by having the original image on another device. If your photo is not synced to another location, Mylio will not delete the photo from your Camera Roll or Media Library.

To learn more about protecting your photos to clear Camera Roll or Media Library space, please see this article.

Free Up Space on iOS or Android

    1. Open Mylio on your iOS or Android device and navigate to Mylio’s settings by selecting “Settings” in the View menu
    2. Select “Free up space on this device”

    6. Select the “Free up space” button to confirm the deletion

The Search Bar

Searching for just about anything is easy in Mylio. You can do so using Mylio’s Search bar. The Search bar is a generic search on your entire library. All metadata and Mylio specific data will be searched. We even have Object Character Recognition to search for words in your pictures like signs, text, or logos. You can use search modifiers to search more directly for a specific piece of information.

The Search Menu

Opening the Search menu allows you to strategically search for certain aspects of photos. Open the Search menu by clicking the small arrow at the right side of the search bar.

The four icons at the top of the Search menu take you between Pinned searches, Rating searches, People searches, and Map searches. These allow you to toggle between different search types and easily narrow down your desired search.

The Keywords search field will search the keyword field of any photo. Select the disclosure triangle to the right of the keyword field to display a list of all keywords within your Mylio database.

Ratings allow you to narrow down your search by rating, label, or flag.

Finally, you can select “Show All” to view all files organized by Images, Videos, and Documents.

Viewing Search Results

Search results done from all views other than Calendar will show Media (separating Photos, Videos, and Documents), Folders, Albums, People, and Locations. Use the row under “Search Results” to change your views.

When in Folder view, you can select the magnifying glass in the corner of each folder displayed to get the Quick View of its contents.

Searching in Calendar View

When in Calendar view, simply typing a word in the search bar will search for events. Mylio will display any event that contains the word searched for in a list on the right making it even easier to find your memories.

Search for words in your images

With Mylio version 3.13 and later, Object Character Recognition (OCR) is now run with standard searches to find text in your images. In the example screenshot below, you can see the term “market” searched for and several images with no keywords, titles, or captions added were found due to the word being found by Mylio in the “Public Market Center” sign in the background of the images. The use of OCR can be an additional tool in your belt to locate, and possibly even discover, more memories in your library.

Search Modifiers

Finding the right photo in a large library can be time-consuming. Mylio can help you locate the photo you’re looking for by narrowing down the results shown when searching for a photo!

This can be accomplished by adding information that you know about the photo into the Search bar in Mylio. When making your search type in a search term, colon, and then your keyword. They can even be combined to really narrow down your search.

Example:

make:Nikon iso:200

This will show all photos shot with a Nikon camera with the ISO of 200.

Search terms include:

  • caption – References the caption field, which is editable in the info panel.
  • copyright – References the copyright field, which is editable in the info panel.
  • date – Can be searched for without the ‘date’ prefix with month/day/year format. Example: 01/18/2016 or 1/18/16
  • file – References the file name, which is editable in the info panel.
  • flag – Use “on/off” to show photos that have been flagged in the rating bar.
  • flash – Use “yes/no” or “true/false” to show photos that did or did not set off flash when taken.
  • folder – Limits searches to a particular folder. Example: folder:Best Friend’s Wedding, folder:Fourth of July
  • importdateThe date in which the file was imported into Mylio.
  • iso – Find photos taken with a specific ISO. Example: iso:100
  • keyword – Searches for specific keywords that have been added to your photos.
  • label – References the label of the picture, which is editable in the rating bar. Example: label:red, label:yellow, label:green, label:blue, label:purple
  • lens – Example: lens:80.0-200.0
  • place – Searches Mylio’s places data to search for photos taken at a specific place, which is editable in the Places Panel.
  • make – Find photos taken with a specific camera make. Example: make:canon, make:Nikon, make:Apple
  • model – Find photos taken with a specific camera model. Example: model:6D, model:D5300, model:iPhone 5S
  • people – Searches Mylio’s people data to search for photos taken of a specific person, which is editable in the people panel.
  • rating – References the rating of the picture, which is editable in the rating bar. Example: rating:3
  • source – Finds photos that were imported from a specific source. Example: source:iPhoto, source:”Camera Roll”, source:Facebook
  • title – References the title field, which is editable in the info panel.

Using Multiple Search Terms

In some scenarios, you may want to combine search terms to better find a specific photo or set of photos. This can be done by either combining elements of a single search modifier or combining two search modifiers with a single space between them. Additionally, you can use quotes to tell Mylio that your search term is a phrase, meaning it has multiple words or punctuation. Mylio does not have full boolean functionality (and/or/not) but we do hope to add it in the future.

Example of Single Modifier with Multiple Variables:

rating:1,2,3

This search will show all photos with the rating of 1, 2, or 3 stars.

Example of Multiple Modifiers:

make:Nikon folder:Whales

This search will return all photos shot with a Nikon camera found in the folder called Whales.

Example of Multiple Modifiers with a Phrase:

make:Nikon folder:”Best Photos” keyword:”stars at night”

This search will return photos taken with a Nikon camera, found in the Best Photos folder, with the keywords “stars at night”.

Using the Mylio Setup Wizard

When opening Mylio for the first time on a computer, you will be guided through setting up the application. The Mylio setup wizard can help you ensure that Mylio is properly configured.

Signing In

To get started with the Mylio setup wizard, be sure you have signed in to Mylio using your Mylio username and password or via the third-party options below the Continue button.

If you are experiencing issues signing in to Mylio you can reset your password by clicking “Forgot Password?” above the continue button. You can also use the gear icon at the top-right to manage your account and visit the support options to reset your device or contact Mylio Support.

Once signed in, the setup wizard will begin…

First Steps

Immediately after signing in, you will have an opportunity to enter a promo code from purchasing an eligible Seagate external hard drive. If you do not have a code or your account is not eligible for the promotion, you can skip this step.

If you’re an existing Mylio user, you will be asked if this is a new device or replacing an old device. This information lets Mylio know if your newly signed-in device should replace a one on your account or not. For instance, if you’ve upgraded your iPhone and will no longer be using your old iPhone with Mylio, select “Replacing old device”. If you’ve purchased a new computer and will use both the new computer and old computer, select “New device”. If you are not sure, it is best to just select “New device” and remove your old ones from the account later.

Build Your Mylio Library

After you sign in, you are asked if you want to Add Files to your library or to skip importing. If you are setting up a new device and just need to sync your library from another device you can Skip. On the next screen to after clicking Add Files you will be presented with a few options outlined in the tabs below.

Note:   if all of your photos are on a NAS please skip this step, and see this article.

This Device

Adding Photos From Your Computer

Mylio will display the option to scan and drives in your computer or let you manually choose your folder to add. By selecting the “BEGIN” button in the center, Mylio will search the selected drive(s) for any folder containing media that can be imported. You can then select which of these you would like to see in Mylio. By selecting “Manually Locate Files”, Mylio will open a file browser and let you point to a specific folder to add.

Once you have selected the Folder(s) to add, you can complete your setup with a confirmation screen explaining how many files and folders will be added into your Mylio library.

External Drive

Adding Photos From an External Drive

Once you have selected that you would like to add photos, videos, and files from an external drive, Mylio will display a list of drives that are currently attached to your machine. If the correct drive is not seen, be sure to plug it in now, select it from the list, and click the “BEGIN” button in the middle of the screen. Mylio will scan the selected drive and show you what folders on the drive it detected with media it can import.

You have two options when adding information from an external drive:

  1. Leave my files where they are – this option will add the photos on the external drive to Mylio without having to copy the original files off the drive. This option is ideal for drives that are still in use and plugged in with semi-regularity.
  2. Copy my files from somewhere else – this option will copy the data from the external drive to a destination of your choosing. This is a great option if you have one or more external drives and you’re trying to consolidate to one larger drive or one computer.

If you choose to copy your files, Mylio will ask you where you want the files to go. Select between copying the files to a second external drive, to your computer’s internal drive, or a cloud service. You can alternatively choose to “add a device to store originals later”. This will temporarily copy the photos to your computer until a device on the account that is set to store all the Originals (a Vault). See this article to learn more about syncing and Vaults.

Online Account

Adding Photos From an Online Account

If your photos are stored in an online account like Google Photos, Facebook, or Flickr, Mylio can download them and add them to your library. Once you have selected Online Services as your source, choose which service you would like to add to Mylio and sign in.

Once signed in, Mylio will display what albums are available to download from Google, Facebook, or Flickr. Select your desired albums and press “Continue”.

Mylio will ask you where you want the files to go. Select between copying the files to an external drive, to your computer’s internal drive, or a cloud service. You can alternatively choose to “add a device to store originals later”. This will temporarily copy the photos to your computer until a device on the account that is set to store all the Originals (a Vault). See this article to learn more about syncing and Vaults.

You will be presented with a confirmation screen to verify your setup. Click Confirm Setup to continue to the last part of the setup wizard or start over.

Complete your Setup

After finalizing your import options, or skipping. You are at the final screen of the Setup Wizard. Use this screen to name your device and complete optional objectives like connecting already organized calendars so Mylio can display your photos into events. When you’re ready, select “Take the tour” to get an overview of naviagting around Mylio’s UI or Complete Setup to start using the app.

Advanced Options

After selecting what you would like to be imported into Mylio, you’ll be given the chance to explore some of Mylio’s advanced options. These include:

  1. Location of the Mylio Folder – this option allows you to store the location of your Mylio directory which will hold your Original images as well as optimized images. This can be moved anywhere but should remain on an internal drive.
  2. Advanced Device Policy – these options allow you to select your device’s Sync Policy on a more granular level. By selecting “Advanced” you can tell Mylio to specifically choose Thumbnails, Previews, or Originals instead of allowing Mylio to decide the best photo quality for you. You can also turn on Selective Sync for remote File and Folder Sync Policy control if desired.

Mylio Quick Start Guide

Welcome to Mylio, the home for your photos, videos, and documents. This guide will help you set up Mylio, add files, and protect them.

Add Files using the Setup Wizard

The Setup Wizard helps you add files to Mylio. Click “Add Files”, then choose one of the four options to where your photos are currently stored that you want added to Mylio. Most new users start with “This device”. When you select this option, Mylio checks your computer’s drive for photos. It shows you the folders that have photos and lets you choose which ones you want to consolidate in your Mylio library. This process will not move the photos from their existing locations nor will it duplicate them; it simply presents them in one convenient, unified library. Click the circular ( BEGIN ) button to get started.

*Click here for a more detailed walkthrough of the Setup Wizard.

Take the Welcome Tour

At the end of the Setup Wizard, select the option to “Take the tour”. If you already finished the Setup Wizard, you can relaunch the tour by going to the View menu (the three vertical dots in the top-right), selecting “Help”, and then selecting “Show Welcome Tour”.

Add a Protection Device

Protecting your memories is an integral part of Mylio. To protect your files, your Originals need to be stored on at least one device. This device should have a significant amount of storage space. External drives, NAS devices, and online services like Amazon, OneDrive, or Google Drive make good protection devices.

You can add a protection device through the Setup wizard or you can open the Mylio Dashboard, and select the “+Add” button

Sign In to Mylio on Your Mobile Device

Mylio is engineered to connect multiple devices. When you add Mylio on your phone and tablet, you’ll be able to manage your library conveniently from those devices. The photos you take on those devices can also be automatically added to Mylio.

Troubleshooting: Updating Mylio

Mac and Windows

Keeping Mylio up to date means that you always have the newest features and tools at your fingertips. If an update for Mylio is available, you will be prompted to install the update automatically. If you decline to update Mylio, you will be asked again each time the application is closed and reopened. If you are having trouble using the in-app update methods, you can also download the latest installer from https://mylio.com/get-app. Installing an update of Mylio over an existing installation will not affect your photos or other user data as long as you follow the instructions listed here.

iOS and Android

Like most apps, Mylio will update automatically from the iOS App Store or the Google Play Store. However, you can manually check to see if an update is available on these devices as well.

  1. Open the App Store on iOS or the Play Store on Android.
  2. On iOS, Select Updates in the bottom right, on Play Store navigate to My Apps.
  3. If an update is available for Mylio, it will be listed here. Select Update on the right side to install the update.

Understanding Map View

Mylio’s Map view is a beautiful and informative way of organizing your photos. Your photos will be pinned on a map of Earth, outlining all of the locations where you’ve taken photos and how many photos you have in that location.

Many cameras, including most smartphones, will record GPS location data when taking a photo. Mylio can interpret this data and automatically fill your Map view. However, if you have photos without GPS data, Mylio also makes it easy to add GPS data to these images and display them appropriately.

Changing Map Styles

Mylio offers three different styles for the Map view:

  • Standard
  • Satellite Hybrid
  • Topographical

To change the Map view style:

  1. While in Map view, select the View menu (three vertical dots in the top-right)
  2. Select “Map Style”
  3. Choose between the options for your personal preference.

This View menu option changes the Map style in Map view as well as the Map tab in the Info panel while in other views.

Viewing and Finding Photos

To open Mylio’s Map view, select Map from the View Selector. If you have photos that contain GPS data, they will appear as pins on the map automatically.

Mylio will collect your images into pins based off of the proximity that they were taken. You can zoom into the map using a pinch-in and pinch-out technique on touchscreens and trackpads, or use the plus and minus signs in the bottom right corner of the map to zoom in and out. As you zoom in, Mylio separates your photos into more defined pins, allowing you to better see where each set of photos was taken. Please see the example below of Map view at different zoom levels:

Zoomed Out:

Zoomed In:

Once you have found a set of photos that you wish to view, select the pin by clicking or tapping on it to view the photos taken in that area.

Searching for Photos

In addition to browsing photos by manipulating the Map view, you can also utilize Mylio’s search from within Map view to find a specific location. For instance, you can type “Bermuda” in Mylio’s search bar to automatically be taken to the island of Bermuda and shown the images taken there.

Alternatively, you can search for a specific address or landmark in the Map view’s search to be taken to that location as well.

Note:  Map view’s search bar does not accept line breaks, so copying and pasting a full address that includes line breaks will return unexpected results.
Note:  Mylio’s map information is delivered by a third party. If a specific photo or set of photos displays the wrong information we are not able to adjust it.

Adding GPS Data

If your photos do not currently have GPS data, you can add GPS data to them in Mylio.

  1. Locate the image that you wish to add GPS data to. You can locate them using All Photos view, Folder view, Album view, People view, or Calendar view.
Note:  these steps must be completed in grid view (multiple photos being seen). GPS data cannot be manipulated in single-photo view.
  2. Open the Map section of the Details panel.
  3. Select the image or set of images so that they are outlined in blue. You can select multiple images by holding the Command key (Mac) or Control key (Windows) while clicking multiple images.
  4. Move the map in the Map panel to the general location you want the photos to be tagged at by clicking and dragging or tapping and dragging the map. You can zoom in and out of the map with the plus and minus sign at the bottom right of the Map panel. If needed, you can make the Map panel larger or smaller by selecting the arrow at the left center of the Map panel.
  5. Once you have a location chosen, drag the selected photos out of Mylio’s center panel and into the Map panel. A green plus sign will appear in the Map panel, showing that you are pinning the images to this location.
  6. Drop the images where you would like them to be tagged. You can fine-tune this later if needed.
  7. Mylio will create a pin containing your images that can now be moved and fine-tuned by dragging it.
  8. Once you are ready to confirm the location of the pin, select the green check mark in the top left. If you would like to cancel, select the red X at the top right.

Fixing Incorrect GPS Data

If your photos include incorrect GPS data, you can change it within Mylio’s Map view or from the image (or set of images) themselves.
