Troubleshooting: Disk Storage Full, Unable to Clear Cache
Updated over a month ago

If Mylio Photos displays a “disk storage full” message and you can’t clear the cache, this guide will help you understand the issue and provide steps to fix it.

Problem

When you try to clear the cache in Mylio Photos to free up space, the cache window may close without actually freeing up storage. This can happen because macOS shares storage information about your Apple Photos library with Mylio Photos.

What’s Causing the Issue?

macOS may report the space used by your Apple Photos library as part of your computer’s internal storage, even if it’s stored on an external drive. Mylio Photos reads this information as if the photos are taking up space on the internal drive, even if they are actually saved elsewhere.

How to Fix It

Step 1: Check Storage Use

Determine if the originals (full-resolution photos) taking up storage space are located in your Apple Photos library.

  1. Count Your Photos - Compare the number of photos in Apple Photos with the number of originals Mylio Photos reports. This can help identify if Apple Photos files are consuming storage space.

  2. Free Up Space Outside of Mylio Photos:

    1. Empty the Trash - Clear your Mac’s Trash to free up space.

    2. Delete Unneeded Files - Remove any files or applications you no longer need from your internal drive.

  3. Clean Up Media in Apple Photos - If Apple Photos contains photos you no longer need, you can use the Free Up Space option on your iPhone or iPad to remove these photos from your device while keeping them backed up. For detailed instructions, visit Free Up Space on Camera Roll or Media Library.

Step 2: Move the Mylio Photos System Folder to an External Drive

If additional space is needed, you can move the Mylio System Folder to an external drive.

  1. Use an External SSD - Set up a fast SSD external drive as the new location for the Mylio Photos System Folder. This drive must be connected whenever you use Mylio Photos.

  2. Separate the System Folder and Vault :

    1. Use one external drive for the Mylio Photos System Folder.

    2. Use a different drive as a Mylio Photos Vault for backup.

Step 3: Check the Minimum Free Space Setting

Mylio Photos has a Minimum Free Space setting, which pauses the application if your available storage drops below a certain threshold. If your free space is under this limit, clearing additional space above this limit can help Mylio Photos run smoothly.
