Moving Mylio Photos to a New Android Phone or Tablet
When you get a new Android phone or tablet, you have two options for moving Mylio Photos over: clone your old device to the new one, or do a clean install on the new device. Which approach you choose depends on how you're setting up your new device.
Option 1: Clone Your Old Device to Your New Device
Android's built-in transfer tools can copy your apps and data, including Mylio Photos, directly to your new device. See Android's device transfer guide for instructions.
After the transfer, Mylio will behave on your new device as if it were your old one. Your library, settings, and sync status all carry over.
Important: Do not open Mylio on your old device after completing the transfer. Opening it on both devices simultaneously can cause sync conflicts.
After the transfer, update the device name in Mylio:
- Open Mylio on your new device.
- Go to Dashboard > Devices.
- Select your device from the list.
- Under Device Details, click the device name field and type the new name.
This keeps your device list accurate as your library grows.
What happens to your Android Photos folder: Your old device's folder under Android Photos stays intact. Media from your old device remains there. New photos taken on your new device will continue to appear in that same folder.
Option 2: Clean Install on Your New Device
If you're setting up your new device fresh — or prefer not to use Android's transfer tools — you can install Mylio from scratch.
- Install Mylio Photos from the Google Play Store.
- Open the app and sign in to your Mylio account.
- Your new device will appear as a new entry in your device list and will begin syncing normally.
What happens to your Android Photos folder: A new sub-folder for your new device will appear under Android Photos, alongside your old device's folder. New photos from your new device will appear in the new folder. Your old device's media stays in its original folder.
When you're ready to retire your old device:
Follow the Unregister Device process to remove it from your Mylio account. Before you do, check whether your old device is the only one that has original-quality versions of your photos. If those files haven't been backed up to a Vault or another device, Mylio will lose access to them when the device is unregistered.
