Troubleshooting: Can’t Delete a Folder

Sometimes, when you delete a folder in Mylio Photos, it appears to be removed, then immediately comes back. This can be confusing, but it’s expected behavior.

Mylio Photos includes safeguards to prevent accidental data loss. One of those safeguards prevents folders from being deleted unless they are truly empty.

A folder can look empty in Mylio Photos but still contain files at the operating system level. These files may be unsupported or hidden, so they don’t appear in the app even though they still exist on disk.

When Mylio detects files it can’t see or manage, it cancels the delete and restores the folder to keep those files safe.

How to Confirm the Issue

When this happens, Mylio will usually alert you.

  1. Click the Notifications icon in the top app bar.

  2. Look for a Delete Failed notification.

  3. Click the notification to view a list of the file(s) preventing the delete.

These files are the reason the folder can’t be removed yet.

How to Fix It

You’ll need to remove or relocate the unsupported file(s) using your operating system.

Step 1: Open the Folder in the File System

In Mylio Photos:

  • Right-click the folder.

Choose Reveal in Finder (macOS) or Reveal in Explorer (Windows).

  • If the folder is on an external drive, choose Reveal in External if available.

Step 2: Check Every Device That Has the Folder

If the folder exists on multiple devices (computers or external drives), repeat this check on each device.

Look for:

  • Hidden files

  • Unsupported file types

  • Leftover system or app-generated files

Step 3: Remove the Problem File(s)

In the file system (Finder or Explorer):

  • Move the file(s) to another location, or

  • Delete them directly from the file system

Make sure the folder is truly empty on disk.

Step 4: Delete the Folder Again in Mylio Photos

Once the folder is empty:

  • Return to Mylio Photos

  • Use the Delete command on the folder again

This time, the deletion should complete as expected.
