Troubleshooting: Device Is in Limited Access Mode in Mylio Photos

What Is Limited Access Mode?

Limited Access Mode restricts what can be done on a Mylio Photos device. It's designed for shared or guest devices where an account owner wants to limit access to their library.

When a device is in Limited Access Mode:

  • A yellow banner appears at the top of the screen.
  • The Account icon in the upper-right corner shows a small lock overlay.
  • Tapping or clicking either the banner or the Account icon opens a notification explaining that Limited Access Mode was enabled by an administrator, along with the account owner's email address.

Account Owners: Is This Your Own Device?

If the email address shown in the notification is yours, Limited Access Mode was applied to your device — either accidentally or at some point when it was used as a guest device.

The easiest way to fix this is from another device on your account. If that's not possible, there's an advanced option below that works directly on the affected device.

Option 1: Turn It Off From Another Device (Recommended)

This is the quickest and easiest path. You'll need another device where you're signed in as the account owner — for example, your phone or a second computer.

  1. Open Mylio Photos on the other device.
  2. Open the Dashboard.
    • On a phone, tap the Dashboard icon in the top app bar.
    • On a tablet or computer, find it in the left sidebar.
  3. Go to Devices.
  4. Select the device that's in Limited Access Mode.
  5. Under the device details, toggle Limited Access Mode off.

Once that's done, go to the affected device, quit Mylio Photos, and relaunch it. The device should return to normal access.

Option 2: Use a Temporary Profile on the Affected Device (Advanced)

If you don't have another device available, you can create a temporary profile on the affected device, use it to turn off Limited Access Mode, and then switch back to your default profile. This process involves more steps — use Option 1 if you can.

Step 1: Open Show Support Options on Startup

On desktop (Mac or Windows): Quit Mylio Photos. Hold down the Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) key, then relaunch the application.

On mobile (iOS or Android): Press and hold the Mylio Photos app icon and choose Show Support Options.

Step 2: Create a Temporary Profile

  1. From the presented Support Options Menu, choose Open Mylio Photos with a different profile.
  2. Click or tap Add.
  3. Give the profile a name — something like LimitedAccessFix.
  4. Select the new profile and click or tap Set as Startup.
  5. Click or tap Close and relaunch Mylio Photos.

Step 3: Sign In

You'll be prompted to sign in as if this is a new device. Tap Let's Go and log in to your Mylio account.

When Guided Import appears, close it without importing anything. On mobile, do not enable camera roll or media library import. This profile is temporary — you don't want to import media here.

Step 4: Turn Off Limited Access Mode

  1. Open the Dashboard and go to Devices.
  2. Find the offline instance of your current device. Because you added a new profile, your device will now appear twice in the list — one online (the temporary profile) and one offline (your default profile in Limited Access Mode).
  3. Select the offline instance.
  4. In Device Details, toggle Limited Access Mode off.

Step 5: Switch Back to Your Default Profile

  1. Click or tap the Account icon in the upper-right corner.
  2. Choose Switch Device Profile.
  3. Select Default and click or tap Set as Startup.
  4. Quit Mylio Photos and relaunch it.

You should now be back in your default setup with Limited Access Mode off.

Step 6: Remove the Temporary Profile Entry

Your device will still appear twice in the Dashboard. Clean this up by unregistering the duplicate.

  1. Open the Dashboard and go to Devices.
  2. Select the duplicate entry for your device — it should show as offline.
  3. In Device Details, scroll down and click or tap Unregister.
  4. Type CONFIRM to confirm.

Make sure you select the correct entry before unregistering. The duplicate will be the one showing as offline after you've switched back to your default profile.

Guest Users: Seeing Someone Else's Email?

If the email address shown belongs to someone else, you're using a device that an account owner has restricted. Only the account owner can remove Limited Access Mode. Use the email address shown to contact them and request access.
