Troubleshooting: Exported Photos Show the Wrong Date
If your exported photos appear to have the wrong date, the issue is usually caused by export settings or by confusion between different date fields in a file’s metadata.
This article explains how to ensure the correct Date Taken is included in your exported images and how to verify the metadata after export.
1. Make Sure Metadata Is Included in Your Export
Mylio Photos offers a SafeShare option during export. When SafeShare is enabled, personal metadata, including Date Taken,is removed to protect your privacy.
If you want your exported photo to keep the original date it was taken:
-
Open the Share menu.
-
Choose Export.
-
Turn SafeShare off.
-
Make sure Camera EXIF is enabled under Metadata.
These settings ensure that the Date Taken (stored in standard EXIF fields) is written into the exported file.
2. Understand the Difference Between “Date Taken” and “Date Created”
It’s common to see two different dates on an exported photo. Here’s why:
-
Date Taken
The actual date and time the photo was originally captured.
Stored in EXIF fields such as Date Time Original or Date Time Digitized.
-
Date Created
The date the exported file was generated on your computer.
This does not reflect when the photo was taken.
Operating systems often display Date Created more prominently, which can make it seem like the export changed your capture date. The metadata itself is still correct as long as EXIF data was included.
3. How to Verify the Date Taken on macOS
-
Open the exported photo in Preview.
-
Go to Tools → Show Inspector.
-
Select the EXIF tab.
-
Look for Date Time Original or Date Time Digitized.
These fields show the true capture date.
4. How to Verify the Date Taken on Windows
Windows File Explorer can display EXIF metadata, including Date Taken.
To confirm the correct date:
-
Right-click the exported photo in File Explorer.
-
Choose Properties.
-
Select the Details tab.
-
Scroll to the Origin section. Look for:
-
Date taken
-
Date acquired (less common)
-
Or EXIF fields such as Date Time Original
-
These values reflect the true date the photo was captured.
Keep in mind that Date created and Date modified in the General tab refer only to the exported file, not the original capture date.
